“at the end of a loop-lock session, when the primer tiles stop and the drugs wear off, whatever computational constructs you were working with will disintegrate. They leave behind the sensation of cathedrals collapsing silently in six dimensions, of powerful truths rendered obscurely into decaying frescoes, of illuminated texts being shut in the tomb of the last person who could read them. Depending on who you ask this is like waking pleasantly from a profound if deeply strange dream, or like having a stroke.”

In Which Elon Pays People To Be His Friend – Zen Of Design

The world is melting, infrastructure is crumbling, facist regimes are on the rise, continuing education is more expensive than ever, there’s very few jobs that pay enough to even rent an apartment after college, let alone buy a home, and the queerest generation ever is seeing their identities legislated away by an increasingly out of touch oligarchy.

But sure… phones are why teenagers are depressed.

In any large organization, it's a good idea to occasionally ask "What are we even doing here?"

In #InfoSec, for me, that means asking how large chunks of work materially impact the security of the organization. All too often massive projects become self-sustaining, spawning new work that is utterly disconnected from original intent.

2/2 it takes non-academic but actually rigorous, responsible & careful writer @davidgerard just a few hours to write up the contents & arguments in Buterin's "essays" & say in clear language what's true about them: "no, it’s not worth treating Buterin’s essays as saying anything useful."

lather, rinse, and repeat across so many other issues relating to digital technology & the academy today

Vitalik Buterin’s philosophical essays: they’re not good

Smart people need the ghost of Socrates to follow them around as a Memento Stultus. “Remember: you too are a dumbass.”

Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain
a lot of policy discussions are hung up on first-order shit like "should we do recycling" and "what things should we recycle" rather than second-order shit like "the guys who say theyre doing the recycling for us are just taking the garbage 5,000 miles away and throwing it in a river"

A lot of startups that raised too much money without the revenue multiples to back it up are about to either vaporize, raise a down round, get acquired, or get profitable.

Perhaps part of the mass layoff math was for potential acquirers to make room for the coming bloodbath.

It's going to be an boom year for incredible journey blog posts at least.
