Further Dalida;

Her "Naké-di, naké-dou" (1969) has quite clearly been written by people who heard David Bowie's "Laughing Gnome" and decided to translate the song's spirit instead of the words. Very, very silly, and it made me smile.

It's all the more jarring on an album that's exploring the losses she's suffered in her life. But how can I not love someone who's reinterpreted "In The Year 2525" into "L'an 2005"?

"Quand Revient L'été" is indeed a French take on "Summer Holiday" by Sir Clifford Richards and Les Shadeux, and it's sweet and gentle where Cliff's original is loud and slightly over-produced. They turn Dalida up a bit after the solo, which is a pity. Regardless, it's a fascinating take.

My exploration of Franco-Italian singer Dalida (1933-1987) has hit the early sixties, and a couple of names on the Discogs page for "Eux" (Barclay Disques, 1963) rather pop out at you: Brian Bennett and Bruce Welch.
