Good Morning Mastodon

This object, called the Helix nebula, lies 650 light-years away, in the constellation of Aquarius. Also known by the catalog number NGC 7293, it is a typical example of a class of objects called planetary nebulae.

Trickle-down economics has been an abject failure over the past 20 years. It’s time to invest in workers. Now.

Sister Mary Kenneth Keller was born #OTD in 1913. She worked with John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz on the design and implementation of Beginner’s All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code — BASIC — and was the first woman in the US to earn a PhD in Computer Science.

Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.

Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

How many discoveries & innovations of #women do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?

Sexism pushed Rosalind Franklin toward the scientific sidelines during her short life, but her work still shines on her 100th birthday

Franklin was born a century ago, and her X-ray crystallography work crucially contributed to determining the structure of DNA.

Yesterday I refused to accept a parcel from Royal Mail as they were using agency workers to break the strike. Today I learned they have returned it to sender rather than redeliver when they don’t have to cross a picket line. I made it clear why I was refusing delivery on that day so I can only assume this is punishment for the “crime” of standing in solidarity. Am I wrong to feel such pride? #CWU #StandByYourPost #Solidarity
@LilacNanny Good for you. Beats me how agencies can morally justify supplying staff to cover striking workers. It’s so wrong. Wrong for the employer to use agency & wrong for agency to supply staff.
