North American fennec fox scampering around the desert southwest occasionally making noise. Highly unfocused tech & language geek oft distracted by new shinies.

I have a poll up on my new account at https://ping.the-planet.space/notes/82m4kdibry asking for votes for genre/tropes to influence a second Seven Days Seven Characters early next month. Seven Days Seven Characters being my current name for something I did back in 2013 - Seven posts on seven days creating a set of rpg characters and a setting for them to exist in. (Once again I'll be using the FATE system for character creation)

What sort of genre should this 7D7C project play with (multiple choices allowed, and feel free to 'write in' by replying with additional genre/trope ideas): (投票) RE: Hmm. Time to test Misskey's polling system. So, getting the urge to do another Seven Days Seven Characters. This was something I did... *checks* back in 2013 (then calling it Character A Day) where over the course of a week I created a character each day as well as a bit of setting along with each character. In 2013 is was a Flash Gordon-esque pulp SF setting. A Sky Patrol spaceship captained by the hero who stopped the invasion of Earth by way of a footrace & friends exploring space.

since it's become so common, they just created a "Gig Economy Tax Center."

because the IRS considers income taxes to be a "pay as you go" tax. this means if you don't "pay as you go" (as in you're an independent contractor and no taxes are withheld from your paychecks), you're expected to estimate what your taxes will be and make quarterly payments.

if you don't, they can assess a fine on top of the taxes you owe, even if you file in a timely manner. it's kind of a messy pain in the ass to figure out what the penalty is.

incidentally, this is why rich people pay tax experts to manage their tax shit for them, and why it's easier to stay rich (or get richer) when you're rich, and why it's easy to get poorer when you're poor.

anyway, if you're in the US and this is relevant, here's the link: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/gig-economy-tax-center

"Sorry, you and your dog must teleport separately."
"We are inseparable!"
"You can go in parallel. You'll only be apart for a few steps."
"No, I want to teleport with my dog!"
"Sir." The attendant sighed. "I assure you, teleporting with your dog won't make you a werewolf "
"Oh."

From my account over on The Planet (the possible, probable?, replacement server for tootplanet), a bit of talk about what mysterious magic allows for frost-free fridges and freezers (hint: your local power company's accountants *love* this secret bit of magic).

Before I sign out for the night: Ever wondered what sort of magic makes it so your fridge doesn't need to be defrosted anymore? Why the magic of having barely any insulation value to speak of. You may have noticed that every once and a while the sound of your fridge's compressor goes away? That's the defrost cycle, when it stop cooling the fridge to allow the walls to warm up and any frost that was starting to form to melt and roll down the walls to a drain.

The cat sat in the window, staring out at the world, gathered his thoughts, and yowled.

He sang greeting & news, a story of his life & conquests; he asked for the same back.

Across the house, his brother faced East while he faced West & set up the counterpoint song - a lament & a eulogy, a story of those they missed & those who had passed.

Across the world, their kin listened, heard, and took up the song, their stories passed among all the giant fuzzy ones.

From The Wizard & The Lonely Princess:

"Indeed Potter." They slowly turn to see Snape looking at them with a raised eyebrow. "I would never do something as obvious as jinxing a broom in full view of people." He then looks at Hermione with a small glare. "Ten Points from Gryffindor Granger for your accusations." He then turns and takes a few steps before stopping. "And five points to Gryffindor Potter for correctly theorizing a method by which I would kill you."

I don't recall the details of the first Potter book that well, but Snape awarding Harry house cup points for correctly deducing a method Snape might use to murder him, if he were to try to do so, didn't happen in canon, right?

@[email protected]:In 1998, a programmer who had been working on Y2K fixes started to get anxious because he couldn't believe how pervasive the problem was. He switched from company to company trying to get away from it, but everywhere he went he became regarded as the Y2K expert and immediately became the team lead for that company's Y2K contingencies. He finally had a nervous breakdown, quit his job, and decided he wanted to be knocked unconscious when the Y2K actually came about.

A month before Y2K he was put into an artificial coma and cooled down to a near cryogenic easily sustained long term life support.

Unfortunately the life support notification system had a Y2K bug, and no one revived him for 8000 years.

Finally he was found and revived. He woke up, and saw himself surrounded by lots of glass, light, stainless steel, and tall beautiful people in white robes. He asked if he was in Heaven.

They replied, "No, this is Chicago. Actually but it's a lot like Heaven to someone like you."

"Someone like me?"

"You are from the 20th century. Many of the problems that existed in your lifetime have been solved for thousands of years. There is no hunger and no disease. There is no scarcity, or strife between races and creeds."

"What year is it now?"

"Yeah, about that - it's the year 9,998. You see, the year 10,000 is coming up, and we understand you know something called COBOL?"

I've started posting a new serial!

"Saving the Cult (if not the World)" begins in a campground - but where will it go?

http://www.lynthornealder.com/2020/01/10/saving-the-cult-if-not-the-world-chapter-one/

An #UrbanFantasy setting based on a very vivid dream.

#ReadMyStuff, it's #FreeFiction (and it's pretty good, if I do say so myself.)
