The health secretary has made many inaccurate statements about vaccines. But the science is clear that vaccines have dramatically reduced childhood illness, disability and death.
Among the recommendations in this week's ACIP meeting was that pregnant women and people 18 or younger receive the flu vaccine in a single-dose formulation without thimerosal, while adults can receive from multi-dose vials but without thimerosal.
The decisions was no doubt influenced by Lyn Redwood, ex-president of the Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group founded by RFK Jr, who made a presentation as a private citizen, a first in ACIP's history.

Cody Meissner, the lone dissenter and the only one with vaccine experience, pointed out that no study has ever indicated any harm from thimerosal.
While little used today in the U.S., thimerosal, an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent, is included in most vaccines around the world, esp. in multi-dose vials. Removing thimerosal will raise costs and reduce access to vaccines.
“Of all the issues that ACIP needs to focus on, this is not a big issue,” Meissner added.
