PSA for people with #cats:
The topical pain medication diclofenac (sold under the brand name Voltaren) is HIGHLY TOXIC TO CATS. Like, so toxic that my cat got sick from me touching him after applying it. If you have cats, it's probably best to avoid this medication entirely.

JWST Cycle 2 Proposal Procrastination Monitor

An anonymous way to monitor JWST proposal submission times In the email from blacker@stsci, the subject line will be like, "JWST Phase I Proposal 3434 submission 4 received". Here, 3434 = the Proposal ID and 4 = the number of times the proposal has been submitted (so far..).

There's A LOT of discussion about content moderation right now and very little of it touches on the fact that we've all lived on the big social sites for the last decade-plus thanks to the massively exploitated labor of mostly-invisible moderation workers. The social web at scale wouldn't have happened without these laborers, who in addition to shit wages, have been exposed to literally every imaginable horror.

If we're remaking this world, let's do better on that front.

The Milky Way-Gaia group at the University of Barcelona is advertising a #postdoc position to study the disk of the #MilkyWay, funded by a project led by Teresa Antoja. UB has a very active Galactic studies group, and would be a great place to work. The application deadline is December 20th.

Job description:

When I give talks about #JWST I usually get a question about micrometeoroid impacts on the mirror.

NASA published an update about micrometeoroid mitigation today:
https://blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/11/15/nasa-webb-micrometeoroid-mitigation-update/

There have been 14 impacts so far on the primary mirror (about two per month), which all fall within pre-launch expectations, except for the big hit they experienced in May. Starting in year 2, they will have micrometeoroid avoidance zones to further protect the mirror.

#Introduction šŸ‘‹šŸ» #Astrodon 🌟

I’m Laura. I’m an #ESA-#AURA astronomer at @spacetelescope.

I’m one of two deputy heads of the #ScienceMissionOffice, where I work on #SciencePolicies for our observatories and on science infrastructure for our staff.

For research, I study the #Kinematics and #Dynamics of small stellar systems using #ProperMotions from #HST, #Gaia, and soon #JWST. I have a particular fondness for #GlobularClusters but also study #DwarfGalaxies and #SatelliteSystems of larger hosts.
