"What are the little, tiny, floaty things?"
"Oh, those are stars."

Overflow account for my love of Star Trek, especially Disco and Lower Decks. Captain Burnham is my Captain.... (+ four pip Admiral.) Let's fly!

Likes podcasts, memes, fanfic, songs, deep dives into the politics of Trek, the triple threat of Mariner, Tendi and T'Lyn, and dulcet thistles.

Here for obsessive nerdity with the crew.

Can't spell at the best of times but trying.

WatchingDiscovery S5

Personal log - I recently finished this novel - Somewhere To Belong and it's now my favourite Star Trek novel.

I really liked how it went into the emotional journey of jumping ahead in time as Discovery did - filled in so many important gaps in the story of the crew and their sacrifice. A powerful meditation on the meaning of home both as a physical place and as something found with other people.

I've also, this evening, reached S4 of DS9 and am really enjoying it. The finale of S3 was a nice spooky mystery and I'm ready for S4 now. Was a joy to see Worf appear - much to look forward to.

Unfortunately these two things, the book and the series, are linked as there were some mega huge spoilers for DS9 in the book - like the whole plot of the war being set out as a history. It's a shame, but it's also been impossible to avoid spoilers and, beyond the big plot points, what I really love about DS9 is the people that make up the team.

Day 28 - Favourite Episode Set In The Present Day

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

😭 I love this episode so much.

- I adore La'an
- I really like this iteration of Kirk and think they make a great team and couple
- Chemistry! (there should be more kissing on Trek (discuss))
- The twist of the knife when La'an can't talk to anyone about what happened
- It was cool to see a future Toronto
- Pelia was so brilliant in this episode

πŸ’” 😭 I am still hoping for a happy ending for La'an and Kirk.

Day 25 - Fave Trek Tech
Hmmm this is a tricky one. I love the replicators and the warp cores and the tricorders, and a universal translator would be amazing. But today I think I'll go with the transporter as the idea of instant travel is very appealing.

Day 26 - Fave Trek Book
I've only read one Trek book, luckily it was good! So my favourite is the Discovery novel 'Desperate Hours.'

Day 23 - Fave Alien Ship

Do I know how it works? No
Is it seriously f*cking cool? YES.

Cleveland Booker's scout ship is so amazing inside and out. Since he's Kwejian this is my top pick for it's amazing disassembly/reassembly tech, those tactile consoles, cosy/sexy interiors, and the Trance Worm rescuing.

I could not find whether Book named his ship, just that it's a scout ship.

(Also lol, I guess Booker and Michael are also my fave alien/human ship πŸ˜„)

Day 19: Fave New Trek First Officer

Una Chin-Riley aka Numero Una!

She's just so great - great leadership skills, so damned capable and trustworthy, clever and tactical, stern but fun, can sing like she's on Broadway... 🎢

Her Illyrian background and her fight for justice was so important and so moving - also creating one of the best episodes of SNW and new Trek: Ad Astra Per Aspera. The loyalty she inspires is itself inspiring.

I love the relationship she has with the younger crew members, especially La'an, and of course the effect she has on Boimler was utterly amazing 🀩

I also feel like SNW has righted a wrong by bringing Una back as such a special and central character. Decades after the choice was made to 'drop the woman rather than the pointy earred guy' to make Trek more palatable to some viewers, Una Chin-Riley is back on the bridge and flying through the stars, where she belongs πŸ’«

Day 18 - Fave New Trek Captain

Captain Michael Burnham.

With her exceptional leadership, brains, strategy, courage, compassion, fight skills, heart, and understanding...for me Burnham is the ultimate Captain.

Day 14: Greatest Character Arc: #LetsFly!

From human child raised on Vulcan (with all that entailed!) to Star Fleet newbie, to treasured First Officer, to mutineer, to prisoner, to the Lorca-grey zone of Discovery........ To Captain and Admiral via saving the universe so many times: Michael Burnham!

Discovery did incredible character arcs, shout out also to Zora and to Saru.

Day Six: Fave Mirror Universe Episode

....The Wolf Inside!

This was a really tough choice as all of the Discovery Mirror episodes are just so good - especially the ones in this part of the series.

I picked Wolf because it was the moment of truth about Ash Tyler and it was such an extreme revelation!

There were more revelations to come but this one was so big and had such implications for Ash and for Michael.

Such a dramatic episode that tested Michael to the limit. (And that's without everything that was going on on the Discovery.) It's not an easy or comfortable watch at all - it really showed the horrors of the Terran empire - but it had me on the edge of my seat about what would happen next...

#StarTrek31DayChallenge

Day One: Without question this is Discovery - The Vulcan Hello.
This was the episode that brought me back to Star Trek, the trailer alone blew my mind. Seeing Michael Burnham and Captain Georgiou working together - their trust and companionship, the desert landscape and desert community, the technique of walking to draw in the sand, the appearance of the ship from the skies.... Even without what comes next this was a spectacular opening episode that set up so much in terms of character and scope of vision. Just completely wonderful! πŸ’«

Day Two: It says it in my bio and that has not changed. My Captain will always be Captain Michael Burnham. πŸͺ

Day Three: This is more difficult as I honestly think there's loads!
I think Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detma were very underrated on Discovery.
But to give a non-Disco answer, I'm going with B’elanna Torres from Voyager. To me, it's still totally unjustified that she was remotely interested in Tom Paris and I think a lot of screen/plot time was wasted there.
