@alexlaw This is a really good point and I really worry about that. Having a whole class of people trained in violent techniques suddenly out of work and motivated largely by shame and pride is a recipe for disaster. Even if it's hard, we need to find a path to redemption and a sense of self-worth not based on relative power.

@rusty It's not my field but I really liked Kieran Egan's "Educated Mind"ยน. He frames orality and literacy as relating to "mythic" and "romantic" forms of understanding. The book has a lot of good references to prior / deeper research.
