Irish queer in Aotearoa.
A couple of years since I left the
#punk scene in the city to try this #off-grid #solarpunk shit in the middle of nowhere while also learning this #parenting lark.

Trying to learn new (to me, but actually very old) skills and figure out how to live my best dynamic equilibrium with this harsh environment.

#MentalHealth and #EDS have huge and constant impacts on my life that I'll likely post about.

Despite only learning it in school, and living on the other side of the world, I am trying to bring my kiddo up with
#gaeilge - the Irish language. I'll hashtag my posts in Irish with the word Gaeilge if you wana filter that out.

I'm not gonna swear AT you, but there will likely be swearing in a shit-tonne of my posts.

I'm not gonna boost or share images without alt-text.

Medical and recreational
#cannabis user, strong #acab sentiments.
Me: aww yeah, I been waiting like a year til my parents got back over here and I had someone who could teach me to drive. I'm 35, it's well past time, I'm SO READY
Dad: ok. It's been a week. Are you ready for your first lesson?
Me: oh yeah. Sure, just... Uh... Let this layer of paint dry and I'm there!
😬
I know there's a hundred good reasons to have more green shit in urban areas generally, but we were in town ( #timaru ) today for a WOF and I took kiddo for a walk round the borderline industrial area, mildly concerned about being able to keep her occupied for the required time.

She was really into all the wee busy plantings around one set of businesses, and then, outside Tyre General, she found this little bermspace. It was the single, squinchy-dry strawberry we noticed first, but as well as the big bush that dominates this picture are 2 types of mint, lavender, dandelion, plantain, yarrow and a bunch of stuff I didn't recognise. She had a tactile ,almost literal field day! Touching, smelling, raining petals down on herself. Ascertaining which ones had been planted deliberately and which ones were likely weeds to figure out what she was allowed to pick, and playing eye-spy games, we easily killed a good half hour there.

At a glance, it's such a paltry, dry looking patch, but it's hard to explain all the inherent value in there.

It's supposed to.. Rain today. Lmao. It just started.
My plan is to spend the day outside, battling thistles.

This picture is the second lil garden bed I planted since moving here. The hens had scratches a bare piece of earth, so I planted and staked it and lovingly watered it every day for a month.

Naturally, thistles came up, and I made the decision not to kill them yet, because I didn't want to disturb the seedlings.

After a month of NOTHING GERMINATING, I started pulling up the thistles, only to find tiny seedlings in the soil. Right. Stop the weeding, I'll have to get them after, I thought.

Another 2 weeks.

The lil seedlings have germinated above ground
😍

Another week, they start to grow their true leaves....
And they're thistles.

Lots and lots of tiny, baby thistles.

I've dedicated 2 months of my life lovingly cultivating the only weed I'm actively trying to get rid of.

I also found this lil guy. The little circles caught my eye initially. I thought they were on leaves, but when I tried to pick them up, I was almost lifting a carpet of moss. I only saw them on moss, so am assuming they are a feature of moss? Lil moss leaves? That sounds a bit absurd now I say it out loud. I'm not super familiar with mosses (curious as now though). I don't usually associate moss with leaves.

#mosstodon
What even is this? Lichen? Moss? Other?
I'm used to seeing lots of St your that grows on rocks, but I'm absolutely not familiar with that stuff flowering.

Ooohhh. While I'm still quite disappointed that the field with all the cowpat got poisoned before I could harvest it for #mulch , I'm pleased to learn that the big bale of hay has been taken, leaving this rather glorious lot of mulchystuff.

Spent the arvo finally getting my seedlings planted out, ready to plant a few hundred more seeds - mostly acacia, corn, pumpkin, cucumber, beans and spring onion.

Looking for some advice about this #yarn please!

Feels like a very silly noob question but..
Is there a way to open this and an end to start from that will be easy to draw the yarn through?

I did my first project with the same brand of yarn and I feel like I did something wrong, it was constantly snagging and needed a lot of manipulation frequently to access the yarn.

So before I start my next project, I thought I'd check if anyone has come across this one before.

Urgh. I'd already forgotten how miserable the cold is. Plus, I suppose, my cold-proof and waterproof boots have completely fallen apart now.

Still feeling wise for not planting anything sensitive before Halloween. (Labour weekend is a TRAP)

The effort so far. Feels like it's taken all bloody day, in between small-child interruptions, and I've got like, half a dozen done.
Finally! I made something. 😏

I'm pleased, but sort of just glad it's finally done, took a lot longer than anticipated.

But hey. Before I started this hat, I didn't know how to
#crochet . Now, there's a whole new world of creative possibility opening up for me.

But also, next project is just the same hat again with different yarn cos kiddo wants one
