Great article by @mmasnick with tips on how to find people to follow.

FollowGraph in particular is very useful. It finds the people that are followed by your followers, and orders them by the number of followers following them.

Okay, that was more tongue twister than useful info. But the point is, it finds the people your followers think are worth following.

It just gives their bio, and a Follow button. But the follow button doesn't actually follow, it goes to their profile, where you can see what they've posted, and follow there. That makes it a little slow, but realistically, you want to do that anyway, and this way it doesn't need your credentials, just your Mastodon address.

Normally Thursday posts are for paid subs only, but this one is free. Some thoughts on how #datascience is a bit too obsessed with tools and we have room to grow in the other way too

@feditips I made my own, along with integrating Mastodon replies and interactions. Code is here:

Add Mastodon replies to your blog - Coding with Jesse

You can now comment on blog posts on Coding with Jesse! I turned off comments years ago, because I was getting tons of spam. But recently, with my return to social media, I decided to integrate Mastodon to give people a way to comment on and interact with my articles.

Looking for people who know something about early computing, especially in the Netherlands. Please boost and help me solve the mystery of this custom made plate that used to belong to my grandfather Bram Jan Loopstra, one of the pioneers of Dutch computing. What do the pictures mean? #computing #history (EDIT: Wow, thanks for the overwhelming response! You may have to check the post on my instance to see all the MANY helpful reactions.)
These mazes aren’t even trying. Literal easy mode.

I have tracked anti-trans legislation for 3 years. Every day, people have asked me where to move or how at risk they are in their state.

So I created the anti-trans legislative risk map.

This is my final map of 2022.

Please subscribe, support my work.

The Final Anti-Trans Legislative Risk Map Of 2022

This map helps you determine the likelihood your state will pass anti-trans legislation in the next 2 years. If you are moving or looking to move, or make other decisions, please use this map!

I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.

When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.

I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps.

EDIT: Replies tell me that this doesn't function in the UK without a VPN.

I wrote up some of the tricks and tools and tips I've picked up that have made Mastodon more useful, and which people seem to appreciate when I share with them: https://www.techdirt.com/2022/12/29/some-tricks-to-making-mastodon-way-more-useful/
