If it's legal to deduct mortgage interest on a second (vacation) home, then I would hope the same deduction would apply to an ancillary residence, such as a yacht (provided other legally required conditions are met, such as lodging there -n- days per year). This part I don't know, unlike Bob, I'm not in that tax bracket.
@JizzelEtBass @rbreich
As I stated, my boat was my principal domicile. Declared as such. I still had to pay property tax, and rightfully deducted that from my federal itemized taxes. I paid cash, so I didn't get a mortgage deduction.

Houseboats are typically built on a pontoon, with a nominal outboard for propulsion. Not especially seaworthy.
If you had looked at my profile picture, you might consider that I'm not wearing Bermuda short and a Hawaiian shirt. I teach sailing, so I definitely know the difference.

They are definitely different. I lived on a 10-meter sailboat, which is definitely not a houseboat. Sailed the waters of the East Pacific for a while, on her. Can't do that on a houseboat.
@nasa Does #askNASA work on Mastodon, too?
@rbreich Use cloth diapers. Vote with your pocketbook.

I was a liveaboard for several years. One of the "boat people." That vessel was my principal domicile. Why shouldn't I get the same deduction as someone buying a condo?

Please understand that that deduction also applies to those who may not have other housing options.

@jbross With Mr. Hesse I don't completely agree. He's probably right about verbal communication, but I sure have learned a lot from watching other people stumble. Including compassion.
