@johnpettigrew @JulietEMcKenna i like to see it that they stop you being a dickhead in print by accident. you can still be a dickhead in print if you really want to, but it'll be on purpose.
Righty ho, now that I have a better understanding of how Mastodon works, I am going to attempt to migrate servers... In theory, I should be able to do this without losing you fine folk...

@JulietEMcKenna If you view a sensitivity read as being a diminution of the author's voice and role, you're bound to be opposed.

If, though, you see it as helping the author write a better story (as you describe), I fail to see how anyone could object.

As so often, the way we frame an issue controls the conclusion we draw.

@johnpettigrew Good points, well made - and of course, writers of colour have faced far higher and more unreasonable barriers to publication than the likes of me.
@beecycling Yes indeed. There's far more to it than that - and for me, the greater the distance between my own lived experience and what I am writing about, the greater the need for fresh eyes with more direct/personal knowledge to give my story a look.
A more interesting article than the clickbait headline suggests. Though I take issue with describing sensitivity readers as 'people whose job it is to cleanse unpublished manuscripts of potentially offensive words!.
That might happen if you've unknowingly dropped a clanger, but the bulk of the input in my experience is getting factual detail and terminology double-checked. That's one good reason for finding a different term, such as Subject Expert. #WritingCommmunity

Hey y'all! When you're writing alt-text for images, please remember that it should really include any text in the image.

Just saying this because I saw someone share a meme and the alt-text described the image but... not the joke :(

Saying not to bother with the favourite button on mastodon because it doesn't affect any algorithm is like saying not to say thank you to someone because no one else will hear.

Stop thinking in those old social media ways of engagement and visibility and algorithms and reach and audience and start thinking about being social.

And BOOST! It's how you saw this, probably!

A favourite is a nice thanks, a boost lets everyone else discover the great thing you discovered too!

Please boost if you’re still masking indoors (in public places)
I feel that Licorice Whiskeybiscuit Is an excellent hobbit name, and I feel the need to come up with some sort of backstory for her.
