@JoeOsborn so the answer to 1 and 2 both turned out to be https://chiparchive.com/mirrors.php and various internet archive uploads; also programs like Modizer on iOS can download tracks on their own from sites like joshw’s game music archives. On Linux I don’t know about downloaders but deadbeef can play chiptune formats.
I’m looking for an mp3 player, hopefully inexpensive, that can play aac and flac, has a replaceable battery, offers Bluetooth, and ideally uses an SD card or mounts as a storage device. Does anybody have a recommendation?
Self hosting achievement unlocked: thanks to a WireGuard tunnel to a $2 vps, I can now send email from my home server to a big name email platform! Very fond of yunohost overall.
Two long shot questions:
1. Where are all the nsf chiptune archives now? Did VORC used to host them? I remember a decade ago finding a rough gigabyte of NSF tracks but have no idea how to do that now.
2. The specific Japanese chiptune artist Hally—I see a few of his songs on streaming services but have no idea how to directly give him money for his music, especially older songs. I don’t want to just have my bootleg concert recording!

I don’t know that the CS academic literature culture(s) are especially well prepared to deal with genAI (focus on propriety, respect for intellectual discourse and relationships, numbers going up, half yearly cycle).

In my senior CS seminar I’m very tempted to include distinctly non-peer-reviewed sources: the @researchfairy blog post on AI as a fascist technology; “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas”; @baldur ‘s LLMentalist Effect article; the “you are not immune to propaganda” Garfield meme.

Misread “Hail Mary” as “Hell Mappy” and got an idea for a romhack
Or, maybe more troubling: is it the position of the US government that birds are not animals?
This US tax agency online form captcha asks me to write which of three given words is an “animal/bird” name. This forces me to ask: does the IRS think that birds are a different category from animals? Does it think that US citizens don’t know that birds are animals?
I have Hirohiko Araki on the mind lately because he came out swinging against generative AI in the last couple of years, and I learned he is still committed to paper and markers and paint in his artistic practice, no tablet computer in sight.
