As the Kevin McCarthy chaos plays out and the Republicans demonstrate their inability to govern, let’s not forget that almost exactly two years ago 139 House Republicans voted against certifying the presidential election. They remain an anti-democratic danger.
Beholden to the extremists, bowed down to Trump even after J6, lacking principle, hungry for power by any means, pledging obstruction and useless investigations—that’s the quality of the man trying to become GOP House Speaker. Sad for America.
Don’t underestimate the millions that still fiercely believe the big lie of election fraud and that Jan 6 was not a deadly insurrection or coup attempt. Repairing the damage of Trump and Trumpism will take decades. We have to continue to advocate for democracy and decency and rule of law. We have to be ready for the long haul.

Sherrilyn IfillI’m a civil rights lawyer. I don’t want to practice before a Court that’s compromised. I want a fair Court. Expansion would make this particular Court more ideologically balanced. Agree. But w/o a real, enforced ethics infrastructure, there will be 18 justices not fully disclosing financials, not compelled to recuse, praying in chambers w/their own faith leaders, going on trips w/groups filing briefs in cases before them, owning stock in indiv companies whose interests are before the Court.
