To crash prod.

Remember kids:

IRC is free.
IRC is a open standard.
You can run your own IRC server.
IRC doesn't collect data on you and sell it.
You can still moderate your channels via invite, voice, and ban modes.
You can run a server on a 486.
IRC doesn't try to up sell you on "nitro".
IRC doesn't need to make money to make some VC happy.

@my_actual_brain @nixCraft These didn't pay enough to the manufacturer - but maybe you could step in...
@DarkSheepArts @Terminhell @nixCraft Being able to hold the literal fruits of her labor after years of operating in the thankless realm of tech probably goes a long way to reestablishing a sense of control and how her work actually does something tangible and positive.
@DarkSheepArts @nixCraft A surprising amount of tech in that area too. But if I had to guess, it's more to do with disconnecting from most tech. Surrounded by tech full time and wanting to 'touch grass' or something.

@nixCraft

Genuine story -- my wife is an ex-tech person (complicated server things I don't understand, then later things with cartography software) and she's currently training to be a professional gardener and horticulturalist (running nurseries, planning gardens, maintaining sustainable ecosystems within them, etc.,) and the tech to farmer pipeline is definitely a thing. At least a quarter of everyone I meet through her is an ex-tech industry person!

@nixCraft living the dream.

Edward Snowden (@Snowden) on X

EU apparatchiks aim to sneak a terrifying mass surveillance measure into law despite UNIVERSAL public opposition (no thinking person wants this) by INVENTING A NEW WORD for it—"upload moderation"—and hoping no one learns what it means until it's too late. Stop them, Europe!

Fedi is the most strange thing in the world.

On normal social media, you write a message and people just ignore it forever.

Here, you write a message, it stays ignored for 1 or 2 years, and then all of a sudden, for no reason, with no explanation, someone finds it somehow, boosts it, and it gets 200 likes and 120 boosts.

What the fuck.

I'm sure someone will boost this message in 2021 or 2022.
