On this day in 1776, bold dreamers pledged “𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳” to the ideals of liberty and self-government. Fireworks still paint the sky, but smoke from very different fires now clouds that promise.

President Trump’s address to Congress was, as expected, riddled with outright lies, distorted half-truths, and dangerous demagoguery. Rather than presenting a vision for a united America, he doubled down on fear-mongering, economic misrepresentations, and xenophobic rhetoric. If there was any semblance of truth in his words, it was buried under a mountain of misinformation.
