technomancy@algernon the past few years I have been avoiding deleting my HN account for a very weird reason: in 2010 I posted in a thread about the Hudson project being taken over by Oracle and suggested they rename it to "Jenkins": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1954946 and somehow they thought it was a good idea, and they took my suggestion
when I started my job at a CI company 6 years later, Jenkins was our main competitor that some of our customers would talk about switching to in order to save costs; everyone was worried about Jenkins
I decided that this would be my Terrible Secret that I would hide for years, only to reveal on my very last day at the job--well, that last day was Friday, so I shared that link in chat and blew a good number of minds
but now it's finally served its purpose, so I can finally delete my account!

It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.

Lucky ✨the narrative has been controlled so much by AI boosters that even the people who are publicly skeptical of it appear to be operating from the default position that AI is powerful/effective/truthful/deterministic and then just trying to argue the morals, when a much bigger problem is that AI is probabilistic, but that's not one we can easily assign morals to unless we start deliberately twisting it into "the AI... is DISHONEST!"
