Tonight I'm running a fresh install of Debian on a 7-year-old desktop with a cheap SSD, a 6th-gen i3, and 20G of DDR4 RAM. You know what? It's OK. It's a little slow for some stuff but it's fine. I bought my laptop last January and it's fast but not that much faster.

With the advent of SSD's, computers are finally fast enough that you don't really need that much power to be good at normal productivity tasks.
