It’s getting close to #DEFCON so we will finish up our current encoding and get everything online and build the updated hard drives for the Data Duplication Village.

Once built I’ll post the stats of what the archive is like now.

Excite! Since I originally archived the videos many years ago more and better versions have been uploaded to archive.org! That saves me a lot of work and the files are much better named.

Finally getting around to something I’ve always wanted to do. Fix the @ShmooCon videos for 2008, 2009, and 2010. Each talk is a series of many small video files.

Because I’m in the process of transcoding to AV1 and adding captions to #ShmooCon, I’m finally going to manually join all the individual pieces to create a single video file per talk.

I usually don’t do this kind of work for conferences that can’t do it themselves, but I like ShmooCon and they had their final year last year. I want to pay them homage by creating a complete collection of their talks in time to include it on the #infocon.org data duplication village hard drive at #DEFCON this year.

@anant We use faster-whisper with an increased beam count to increase accuracy over the default. It slows us down a bit, thought.

There is another even faster version of whisper, but is a more complicated setup and configuration for us. We just haven’t had time to install, test accuracy, and integrate into our workflow. Hopefully in the next week or so once the current jobs are complete.

The slowest party of preparing videos is generating the audio captions. There are some options to speed it up, but it reduces accuracy somewhat. We don’t want to have to ever regenerate them so it’s an upfront cost.

Currently generating for all of the HITB and ShmooCon talks, it will take more than a week.

@buherator Thank you for the suggestion, no one ever makes them, so even though we have that conference already it’s still cool that you did.
@buherator Yes, in the queue!

Recent #InfoCon updates:
These conference series have been completely re-encoded into AV1 format to pseudo-stream in your browser. All videos have had English captions generated and embedded into the video as well as saved in a subdirectory.

Grinding away on some new updates
We have rebuilt our primary #bittorrent server and are reloading seeds now. In the next few days all the rainbow tables, wordlists, and cons should be available again!
