If you will be in Paris next week, you are all invited to attend the Ph.D. defense of Tri Dung Nguyen.

"Photometric modeling to characterize planetary surfaces in the solar domain"

The thesis is directed by Stéphane Jacquemoud and Antoine Lucas, and will take place at #IPGP on December 11 @14:00.

Save the Date

The Mars Interior and Geophysics after InSight Meeting is scheduled for July 16–18, 2024, in Maryland.

The goal of the meeting is to bring the InSight science team and broader science community together to assess what has been learned about #Mars from #InSight data, assess the broader implications for rocky planets, and determine key remaining questions.

The deadline to register for the "Earth and Planets Origin and Evolution Workshop" that will be held in Paris (May 13-17) is approaching. If you would like to attend, or submit an abstract, the deadline is February 15!

The oral sessions will take place in the Verniquet Amphitheater of the National Natural History Museum of Paris, and the poster sessions will take place across the street at the ground floor of #IPGP.

And of course you will want to read the "Lunar Magnetism" chapter that was led by #IPGP author @mrak. The attached image shows that magnetization in the lunar crust is the rule and not the exception!

After a long wait, the "New Views of the Moon 2" book is finally published 🎉

This volume reviews the current state of lunar science in 19 chapters. Topics include the formation of the #Moon, #differentiation, #ImpactCratering, #volcanism, #tectonics, #dynamos, #magnetism, #volatiles, #SpaceWeathering, and the lunar #exosphere.

On Mars, dust avalanches triggered by major earthquakes

By correlating data collected by the SEIS seismometer as part of the #InSight mission on #Mars with available orbital data, a scientific team reveals that Martian seismic activity can be responsible for dust avalanches.

In a study "The Mantle Viscosity Structure of Venus" that was published in the Geophysical Research Letters, Maia et al. used gravity and topography data of #Venus to show that this planet has a low-viscosity zone in the upper mantle. This zone is about 200 km thick and is about 10 times less viscous than the underlying mantle. This feature is analogous to Earth's #asthenosphere and could be a result of partial melt being present in the mantle.

Now that we have moved our home to solarsystem.social, it's time for a new #introduction!

We are the #Planetary and Space Sciences group at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (#IPGP). Members of our group are involved in developing planetary seismometers, such as for the #InSight mission that operated on #Mars and the upcoming Farside Seismic Suite that will land on the farside of the #Moon.
