Observing conditions were bad at our place and we could only see the total eclipse for few minutes; once the Moon was high enough in the sky. However, I did a time lapse video while the Moon was still in the penumbra.

Since I started as a spectrum manager at the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope, I assessed the electromagnetic compatibility of more then 100 wind farms with our observations. In the beginning, this was a relatively rare event, but in the last years this has sky-rocketed. This year alone, I checked more than 25 cases, and we are still in August 🫣

Planetenwaagen Wacken-Style.

Sorry @hausderastronomie 😳

This is certainly one of the more crazy things in my scientific career. Together with my colleague Gyula Józsa, and other great colleagues from the German astro community (German Astronomical Society, MPIfR, HdA, Uni Potsdam), I will run a Dark and Quiet Skies & Astronomy booth at the Wacken 2025 Space Camp. If you are at the festival, feel free to visit us and have a chat. We will keep you posted on our social media channels. 🤘

The European Commission has published a draft for the new "EU Space Act"

Astronomy is covered in Article 72.

I just returned from an intense week in Grenoble, where we had our yearly Committee on Radio Astronomy Frequencies (#CRAF) meeting after a 2-day workshop of the IAU/CPS, which I co-organised. Our host, IRAM, was so kind to invite us to the NOEMA observatory on Plateau de Bure, a sub/-mm radio interferometer at 2550 m altitude. NOEMA just got a big extension and now features twelve 15-m antennas. I wanted to go there since many years and I'm super grateful to the IRAM that they made it possible.

This time of year isn't ideal for my astrophotography setup, which is relatively wide-field (with a focal length of just 300 mm). At mid-northern latitudes, the Milky Way disk sits too low in the sky to easily capture beautiful nebulae, and most galaxies appear too small. 1/3

Almost three years it eluded me, but now the weather was playing along such that I could finally capture an image of the Rosette Nebula with my backyard telescope. The nebula is one of my favorite objects in the night sky.
