When a 24-year-old former Marine experienced a manic episode at a southern Indiana rest stop, his mother called 911 for help getting him mental health treatment. The woman would watch as her son, Taylor Ware, was bitten by a police dog, shocked with a Taser, pinned to the ground and injected with a sedative. He would die at a hospital days later. Two experts who reviewed Ware’s August 2019 death for The Associated Press said the initial responding officer’s decision not to wait for backup triggered a chain of events that resulted in a preventable death. Ware’s autopsy found that he died from “excited delirium" — a disputed condition used for decades to explain the deaths of people restrained by police.
The difference between the two people running for president right now could not be more stark. Forget about any policy squabbles for a second and just look at how the two candidates describe their vision of the future.
The current president consistently seeks to strike a positive, proud tone and outlook for the country, however distasteful his policies may be to 50% of the electorate. This is good and normal and very much what we have come to expect over the years from those who hold the highest office in the land, and who command the most powerful armed forces in the world.
Meanwhile, Trump has very plainly said that there will be dark days ahead for this country -- whether he wins or loses. He's not proud of this country and says so constantly, and his disdain for everything the American flag stands for is exceeded only by his incessant need to drape himself in them.
And somehow this is an appealing choice for a good chunk of the electorate? Dark days ahead, indeed.
You’ve mentioned MOCA bridges a lot on ATP; do you have a good model you can recommend?
@ivory I'd love an option (e.g., a right-click menu item) to stop a selected animated GIF from animating in the Mac version of Ivory.
(I’ve had an animated GIF running on my screen for weeks on one of my low-volume timelines because not enough new posts have appeared to push it off the end of the visible region. I've been manually scrolling in the opposite direction just to get it off the screen, but then I forget about it and think there's more posts to read, so I scroll, revealing it again.)
