I'm still letting my #FinalFantasyXVI thoughts simmer.

Some quick non-spoiler impressions though:

Overall I really liked it, the combat is great, the music is excellent, and the spectacle is unprecedented.

The story starts really strong, tense, and hectic and maintains that level for a good long while... but I think it kinda tailed off towards the end.

Plus the ending itself didn't really satisfy me - I'm probably gonna be reading a bunch of #fanfic to 'fix' that ;P

I'm like halfway through #FinalFantasyIX, I think. Late disc 2.

I like it a lot! Very cute artstyle that holds up well, and I like where the story is going so far.

The combat feels really slow compared to the previous games though. Even on the fastest ATB setting the bars just take forever to fill. I'm sure they had their reasons to make it that way, but it's pretty frustrating.

My progress got interrupted by FF16 releasing, but I'll be back to playing it this weekend.

Time for a very delayed update to my #FinalFantasy thread!

Since I last posted, I finished #FinalFantasyVIII, started #FinalFantasyIX, and bought, played, and finished #FinalFantasyXVI!

My impressions of FF8 stayed pretty much the same as my previous post - super weird and experimental, but unfortunately didn't really land for me.

Challenging people to Triple Triad matches while things were going to shit never got old though! Those matches on the station were *wild*

Speaking of which, I've already started #FinalFantasyVIII

I'm in the middle of disc 2 and so far it's... very weird. A wild departure from the rest of the series, in many different ways.

The plot so far is kind of a mess. Maybe intentional due to memory stuff? It's not really landing.

I don't like the combat/junction system, but maybe it will grow on me.

Triple Triad is great though. I already liked it in #FFXIV, and there's more interesting rule variations here.

Also, some of the plot and character beats reminded me of #MassEffect 2, which I replayed recently.

Ultimate weapon quests were like crew loyalty missions, you could check-in with the crew aboard your ship between events, the final escape sequence...

I suspect ME2 was heavily inspired by #FinalFantasyVII - or maybe #FinalFantasy in general? I still have a bunch more games to go!

Overall I liked it a lot.

Once the plot got back in gear it was pretty much non-stop to the end, and the story got really interesting!

I loved the combat system, materia combos let you be super creative.
It's a shame some combos like 4x Cut + Counter don't work, when even more busted stuff like dualcast Knights of the Round + MP Absorb works just fine and lets you go infinite with Mime.
