Over the past year I've been playing through the whole #FinalFantasy series, starting from 1. Before this I'd only ever finished FF Tactics Advance (which I love), and FF15 (which was a bit of a mess, but fun).

I've started and not finished a bunch of others in the series over the years;

FF7 I barely got out of Midgar.
FF8 I played a bunch but I forget where I stopped.
FF9 I have on PS1, but I don't remember ever launching it?
FF10 I'm pretty sure I'm on the final stretch - I put it on hold to do things in order.

#FFXI weirdly, I have finished this past year - plot-wise, anyways. It's much more solo-able than it used to be, apparently. Still a grind, but I enjoyed it a lot!

I've heard rumours that they might include it in the #FFXIV sub in future, and I hope they do. The story is worth experiencing, despite the jank of the UI and controls compared to FFXIV.

But back to my series playthrough.

As a long-time #FFXIV player I wanted to get context on where Endwalker patches are going. You only really need to play FF4 for that, and it's non-stop action from start to finish. Exactly the right length for the story it wants to tell.

Overall it's been kinda amazing how well the early games hold up. In Pixel Remaster form, at least.

I'm up to FF6 at the moment, and I can see why it's a lot of people's fav. The plot and characters so far are much better developed than the earlier games in the series.

I think I'm roughly halfway through it... I can tell there's something big coming soon (the cave opened, contents escaped :P)

I've heard FF7 Remake isn't so much a remake as a sequel, so I'm probably gonna play the original first when I finish 6. I'll let y'all know how that goes!

I just finished #FinalFantasyVI Pixel Remaster! It ended really well!

I had this weird feeling of reverse nostalgia going through the Warring Triad and Kefka in the final dungeon. It's amazing how faithfully the pixel art is represented in #FFXIV. And the music!

Although, the final fight was kinda trivialized by my level 89 Terra with all spells and Celestriad + Soul of Thamasa 🤭
Ultima spam for dayyyyys

Onward to the original #FinalFantasyVII!

I'll be playing the PS4 release 'cause I got it on sale sometime last year.
I have the PS1 release somewhere, but this way I can get trophies and keep playing on my #SteamDeck via remote play, for more comfy couch + bed gaming~

I've now played up to the part of #FinalFantasyVII where I'm pretty sure I stopped as a kid, which was right after the motorbike chase where you leave Midgar.

It's been fun so far! I'd forgotten pretty much all the events leading up to that point, and it's a pretty hectic opening.

I'm also kind of surprised how cutscene heavy they went right out of the gate when they moved to 3D.
I guess for the devs, the PS1 discs must have felt absolutely massive by comparison at the time.

#FinalFantasy

I'm also enjoying the materia+sockets system more than I remember; I think it's what put me off as a kid with very little experience of RPGs, but it's cool how flexible it is for character setup.

The amount of menuing to move things around between equipment and party members is a bit of a pain though!

I got diverted for a bit there playing Mass Effect and then Bloodstained: RotN, but I'm back to playing through the original #FinalFantasyVII

I just listened to Cid's sad rocket story then crashed his plane in the ocean!

The story has been kinda meandering since leaving Midgar and I'm not sure where I'm at in the overall 'arc'. Right now I'm not as engaged plot-wise as I was throughout FFIV and FFVI.

The battle system and materia is still fun though!

#FinalFantasy

Aha, things seem to be picking back up again? I just got the keystone and visited the temple.

I can sense there's a twist coming up, and due to cultural osmosis I think I know what it is >_>

Those temple cutscenes sure were weird! I think that's mostly the intention, but the english translation is also pretty awkward so it's hard to tell sometimes.

#FinalFantasyVII #FinalFantasy

Wow, so much happens in quick succession after the temple; the ancient city ruins, Aeris' death, learning about her parents, finding the crater, and then learning about who/what Cloud actually is.

I'm amazed I was somehow unspoiled on that last part!
The fact that Aeris dies is like the most well-known plot point of #FinalFantasyVII, but I'd heard *nothing* about Cloud's real backstory.

I'm interested to see where it goes from here!

#FinalFantasy

It's also cool that they let you play as other characters after that, although it seems like Tifa's going to be the main character now? If so, great! She kicks ass.

I wish you could freely switch who you're running around as like in the previous games, but this is also fine.

#FinalFantasyVII #FinalFantasy

I finished the original #FinalFantasyVII!

Overall I liked it a lot.

Once the plot got back in gear it was pretty much non-stop to the end, and the story got really interesting!

I loved the combat system, materia combos let you be super creative.
It's a shame some combos like 4x Cut + Counter don't work, when even more busted stuff like dualcast Knights of the Round + MP Absorb works just fine and lets you go infinite with Mime.

#FinalFantasy

Also, some of the plot and character beats reminded me of #MassEffect 2, which I replayed recently.

Ultimate weapon quests were like crew loyalty missions, you could check-in with the crew aboard your ship between events, the final escape sequence...

I suspect ME2 was heavily inspired by #FinalFantasyVII - or maybe #FinalFantasy in general? I still have a bunch more games to go!

Speaking of which, I've already started #FinalFantasyVIII

I'm in the middle of disc 2 and so far it's... very weird. A wild departure from the rest of the series, in many different ways.

The plot so far is kind of a mess. Maybe intentional due to memory stuff? It's not really landing.

I don't like the combat/junction system, but maybe it will grow on me.

Triple Triad is great though. I already liked it in #FFXIV, and there's more interesting rule variations here.

#FinalFantasy

Time for a very delayed update to my #FinalFantasy thread!

Since I last posted, I finished #FinalFantasyVIII, started #FinalFantasyIX, and bought, played, and finished #FinalFantasyXVI!

My impressions of FF8 stayed pretty much the same as my previous post - super weird and experimental, but unfortunately didn't really land for me.

Challenging people to Triple Triad matches while things were going to shit never got old though! Those matches on the station were *wild*

I'm like halfway through #FinalFantasyIX, I think. Late disc 2.

I like it a lot! Very cute artstyle that holds up well, and I like where the story is going so far.

The combat feels really slow compared to the previous games though. Even on the fastest ATB setting the bars just take forever to fill. I'm sure they had their reasons to make it that way, but it's pretty frustrating.

My progress got interrupted by FF16 releasing, but I'll be back to playing it this weekend.

#FinalFantasy

I'm still letting my #FinalFantasyXVI thoughts simmer.

Some quick non-spoiler impressions though:

Overall I really liked it, the combat is great, the music is excellent, and the spectacle is unprecedented.

The story starts really strong, tense, and hectic and maintains that level for a good long while... but I think it kinda tailed off towards the end.

Plus the ending itself didn't really satisfy me - I'm probably gonna be reading a bunch of #fanfic to 'fix' that ;P

@Ghosty That’s one of my favorite FF games. But you’re right, the speed of the battle system is one of the biggest drawbacks. I really appreciated the game speed setting in the remaster, it goes a long way towards helping.

Glad you’re enjoying it!

@Ghosty Final Fantasy IX holds up really well, it is actually one of the few from that era that I don’t feel any need for a remake of. Graphically the remasters have done a wonderful job keeping it looking good. And while it could be enhanced with voice acting, the emotion and characterisation comes across really well from great use of animation.
@Ghosty I LOVE THAT GAME it's one of my fave games of all time but it is pretty much the most divisive one in the FF series
@ldottxt I can see why! It seems like they went all-in on it, and it either matches your tastes or it doesn't
@Ghosty VIII really depends on when you played it. For me, it was the second FF I played (after the original game on a borrowed Nintendo). I adore it, I love how different it is, how the music is amazing with such minimal support for it, but I also admit it got a really lackluster translation and it's not for everyone.
@Ghosty I swear I like FFVIII more for the stuff the fandom did with it than for the game itself. Massive nostalgia for me now, though! It was one of my first video games.
