I've liked listening to scratchy old blues for years. I listen to rock as well. Rock's entertaining. But the old blues songs seem to contain something extra. Like the best horror flicks, they seem to stay with you after you've finished listening. But I wanted to put my own twist on the genre as well. Covers are fine for busking, you're not going to get Charley Patton turning up in Whitechapel with a guitar, exposing you as a cheap imitation. But originals (as far the lyrics go anyway) are where you can put your own stamp on it.

Reminds me of a book I read about the "Joker" movie, and it's real-life context, including a New York City sanitation workers' strike in the 1970s.

@ricardoharvin I watched it in color. It looked good! Deffo over-saturated, but it did suit the era of cocktails and nice big ol' gas guzzling cars. I guess you're going to lose the expressionist thing of B&W photography of using the angles of architecture and shadows . I might re-watch a bit of it in B&W. I really liked the ending of the series! Not a cop-out of false optimism. Proper noir!
SPIDER-NOIR REVIEW
- CONTAINS PLOT SPOILERS
Binge-watched #spidernoir over a couple of nights. I expected to be disappointed, but wasn't! Cynically, amazon prime, well Mr. Bezos is an expert at selling stuff, even stuff that has an "anti-capitalist " sub text. Spider-Noir doesn't as much necessarily as other series like The Boys, or Fallout, do.
But there's definitely that undercurrent in hard boiled genres, pulp detective novels for example:

Anyway, I was glad the series didn't end with a false positive. It turns out our lugubrious hero doesn't get the girl, all he gets is to continue his working life ,and a hotdog. Sort of like real life, plus freak powers.

THE SALA GANG EPISODE 2
https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/the-return-of-the-repressed-4731827/episodes/60-the-magic-circle-swedenborg-241505855
Main episode after previous intro, about the hypnotist Sigvard Thurneman's ritual murder gang, that terrorised the Electrical Utility town and former mining town of Sala in Sweden in the 1930s, with Capone-inspired heists and hits. The first murder was of a cab driver, Sven Eriksson on Nov 15 1930.A Browning pistol was used. In the cab was found the driver's copy of an anarcho-syndicalist newspaper. In this murder none of the cabbie's money was taken. Was he at least partly a political target? Aside from the "From Hell"-esque project of evil for evil's sake. Thurnemann had a connection to an Abwehr (Nazi military intelligence) agent and Swedish army officer called Hans Linke. Linke personally sought out leftists for bloody fist fights, and had trained some of Thurneman's gang members as part of a paramilitary group in firearms and explosives in the forest around Sala at night. #truecrime #paraPsychology #Nazism #anarcho-syndicalism

First in a series about a occult murder gang in early 20th century Sweden. After an artistic hypnotic regression into the life of it's founder, the two researchers chat about their coffee rituals. Then do secret societies determine politics (as right wingers allege)? Or did the secret service arms of the state use occult orders for their own ends? (As an illustration the films the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is pre-modern, Dr. Mabuse is more about hypnosis, more psy-op material.) Modern secret services don't use occult techniques (Col. Michael Aquino was the last op to do so.) They use other front orgs. Lots on the background to the murders. How the town of 8,000 was at the same time feudal, peasants still renting land from lords, but industrialising. Many of the gang members were engineers, radio operators. The town as a bootlegging route, and the influence of Hollywood gangsterism on the murder gang: "We can't get caught, our cars are faster than the police's"
Woke up after nightmares about despatch riding. It's over a decade since I did this type work. I remember when I would be riding a motorbike all day with the rain hammering down. I would go through a tunnel and it would be temporary bliss. Lovely and dry in there. And the warm air gets trapped down there. So I'm thinking about busking in an underpass, when I get busking! And it'll be underground. Nothing but the earth under me. Plus the acoustics off the ceramic tiles will be great. Since I only have a voice and acoustic guitar. No amplification. But I did blow £13 on some "bell bronze" strings this week. They are supposed to sound a bit like cymbols and old bells...we'll see...
