I am a data scientist, researcher, engineer, sometime-traveler, and African SFF author. I lead technology development on open data and research-publication software services, with a focus on ethics and curation.
I am fascinated by the frontiers of human progress: innovation vs ignorance; wealth vs poverty, migration vs stasis.
I also drink a great deal of coffee.

There was a particular type of friendless South African bully at schools when I was a kid. The one who didn't beat you up himself, but had money & sycophant yes-goons who would beat you up for him. This is their form of humour. Including his weird name-calling & obscure insults. Think of it like scary-clown memes. It shouldn't be terrifying, but it is, especially when he turns it on you.

My email signature states the following:
*Please note that I work flexibly and may send emails in the evenings and at weekends. I do not expect anyone to reply outside their own working hours*

If I'm emailing a junior colleague outside regular working hours I move this up to the top of the email to ensure they don't feel pressured to respond immediately.

To my mind, news organisations are the best long-term hosts for Mastodon servers.

* We're good at big-load infrastructure, and used to sudden surges.
* We know how to monetise communities indirectly and unobtrusively, at least well enough to carry hosting and admin costs.
* We understand moderation and legal obligations around content.
* We're pretty trustworthy, pretty well (self)regulated, very transparent, and extremely thick- skinned.

@spnylbstr I've been teaching data science for a few years, & gradually building a taught masters course. I split the core skills required of a data scientist into four equally complex & important parts: ethics, curation, analysis, & presentation. Analysis as what most data science courses teach, but I hold that you can't teach that without the others. Presentation includes all aspects of research communication, from papers to viz. https://github.com/whythawk/data-as-a-science
