The V2.2 Universal Radio Controller will now ship with a prototyping area giving access to key signal and control lines.

I'm working on shareable documentation for the 12-pin header to enable innovation.

Possibly a word first - CAT control for Baofeng HT radios. Great for automatic station operations for Packet and APRS. Read full details on my latest Universal Radio Controller blog: https://g1lro.uk/?p=189 and see it in action on the video on my blog.
Adding CAT functionality to a Baofeng with the Universal Radio Controller

The Universal Radio Controller is fairly unique in that it can do TX/TX/PTT and programming for a Baofeng (and other two-pin radios) without needing to unplug any wires. The Baofeng radios traditionally lacked any type of Computer Aided Transceiver (CAT) capability, but the Universal Controller can drive the programming capability of the radio at

A look inside the V2 Universal Radio Controller

The second version of the Universal Radio Controllers evolves several features of its predecessor and has additional Computer Aided Transceiver (CAT) capabilities. Other than the new CAT feature, the notable changes from the V1 edition are: Hardware relay for PTT for maximum versatility and reliability. TX audio isolation during receive (the mic line has

I was super proud to have my Universal Radio Controller featured in some depth on the Ham Radio Workbench podcast this week. Many thanks to @smitty for the mention!

Universal Radio Controller featured on Ham Radio Workbench Podcast

This week's HRWB podcast had a great mention for the Universal Radio Controller and in particular its unique OHIS capabilities, USB connected sound card and transceiver PTT controls. George KJ6VU described the URC as "pretty universally useful" You can listen to the entire podcast at https://www.hamradioworkbench.com/podcast - well worth subscribing to. Many thanks to Mark

Here is #DireWolf connected to a Baofeng radio using my Universal Radio Modem and doing APRS @womble
@smitty I've added OHIS support to my latest radio controller version. It acts as a pass through so can be used for digital modes or just as an OHIS connected USB sound card with PTT - great for auto CQ etc.
Information for using the versatile AIOC to connect to a regular transceiver for APRS and packet radio. The connections look to be compatible with http://OHIS.ORG standards so could work with a wide range of radios. @smitty
Open Headset Interconnect Standard

A successful and sunny Newbury hamfest this morning with my old friend Dave G7IYK and his fabulous #hamradio t-shirt. I managed to buy just 1 radio today for some 2m packet experiments.
I'm not sure why Baofeng bothers to manufacture a microphone which actively degrades voice to such an intelligible level, but this inelegant solution seems to help significantly. I think I'll pop some acoustic foam in the hole for aesthetics.
I'm really impressed with this little radio so far, especially for the price. The receive sensitivity is the best I have on any HT. Software config isn't great, no bulk import so need to key in each channel, but the vendor is providing CHIRP support soon that will completely fix this. USB charging is the big win for me. It arrived in 4 days to the UK too.
