Not *everything* that's a criticism of nature worship is an attack on Shinto or on you
(not that religion is above criticism. Nor it's usefulness for encouraging fascistic thinking/enforcing social norms and even ethno nationalist identity with which to persecute those in the out groups. And it's not like Japan is all that great about treating their indigenous people or their religious beliefs w much tolerance or acceptance. In part because of their fascistic ethno nationalism)
I can only assume the extremely canned response (which conflates Shinto with the fascistic tendency to fetishize the vague concept of nature while bemoaning modernity and passively normalize the everyday eugnenacs against Useless Eaters, like disabled people and children) is useful in some situations.
With people who aren't already moderately familiar with a wide variety of world religions and different tendencies within them (including Shinto).
But it's annoying at best anyway

Miyazaki is an abusive parent and boss. When he has hierarchical power over others, he makes them miserable and touts his Superiority Genius and Rightful Place At The Top as justification.
Which is inherently a fascistic mindset and environment. That can't really help but taint how he, and those who work under them, think and feel and internalize as Natural and Just.
Also it's not uncommon for people to believe (even if just symbolically) in gods and spirits that represent different aspects of nature.
But any fixation on any god that is too strong can turn to fascism. And when your gods are literally just the whole broad concept of "nature" that is both a feeble underdog under attack and also the ultimate superior force that sits at the top of any real hierarchy.
That's just highly artistic eco fascism and eugenics apologia

Not many people talk about Ghibli critically at all. But this article does do a fairly decent job of dissecting some of the movies and the cultural context behind them
(mainly the apologia for Old Japan which was imperialistic and fascist. I don't think it touches on it, but even grave of the fireflies is like being told to sympathize with the kids of Nazis w/o ever showing Nazi victims or anything)
