Langan's work was surprisingly hard to get hold of on Kindle but WordHorde has just released his older collections.
Re Langan and Barron, I'd actually compare them to King and Straub respectively. Langan, more pacy and more character driven, Barron more consciously mannered.
'Tethered' by #johnlangan from his Mr Gaunt collection is pure gold. The ending skates this side of being #Goosebumps like but Langan pulls it off without maklng it absurd. Always nice to have a good seance scene. #weirdfiction #weirdtales #horror #horrorliterature

But the Times continues to relentlessly normalize Trump's metastasizing evil. This is a choice. The bosses made that choice, and the journalists gladly went along.

@MikePalumbo The short stories are excellent. I've intermittently bene reading the Silver John novels- After Dark and the Hanging Stones- but haven't been likewise captivated. John works best in short narratives, the novels lose the campfire story feel.
John Langan's 'House of Windows' becomes ten times clearer when read with Fritz Leiber's 'Our Lady of Darkness' in mind.

@houfu I always felt that intelligence is relatively cheap- there are a lot of intelligent people out there. Success (for most definitions of success) tends to come more from a combination of hard work, interpersonal skills, wisdom and good old luck on top of that base of intelligence.

Reflecting on it, the reason I think the OceanGate situation has become such a flashpoint for anger is because it's such a perfect microcosm of the problem with everything right now. Decisions are not made based on safety, reasonable caution, or concern for human life. Every decision is instead made from a default assumption of 'what if the bad thing just DIDN'T happen?' We are given pie-in-the-sky promises and sizzle reels and an endless PR hype-cycle for every new innovation and inevitably it fails to work, harms people, and then is maybe barely apologized for before the next bad idea comes down the pike. OceanGate's underengineered, undercooked, doomed submarine isn't merely a metaphor for the hubris of the wealthy, it is a scale model of the way the wealthy dictate our reality. All consequences can be ignored, all blowback can be forestalled, let the end-user eat the cost. I am not angry because the submarine was badly-made. I am angry because I live in a vastly larger pressure vessel being managed and maintained by the exact same people.
