I like mastodon and the idea behind it, but it always feels a bit... Clunky? It feels like a space station that's been cobbled together out of a bunch of different space ships instead of something designed to actually be a long term living space station.
It's got that solarpunk vibe to it, pulled together out of the community instead of provided by any corp. How things work depends on the part of the station you're in. In some parts the lights don't work and no one polices the streets. In others they've got replicators and a functioning militia. There's plenty of engineers to keep it running but it's generally held together by tape and a prayer.
Bluesky has the feeling of a space station that was designed to be a space station, but by someone who didn't know what it needed until people started to live there. They started with a frame, habitat, and some basic necessities, and over time started to bring in more things and better engineers as they learned what was really important for a station.
It's corp funded, but the person in charge actually wants to do good even if it's in a haphazard way. We don't really know what's going to happen when the money runs out but it's becoming a cohesive habitat with parks, good policing, and a thriving artistic community.
We don't talk about what Twitter became. It used to be a thriving station on the fringe of space, now it's been taken over by cardassians.
