@glyph for what it's worth, my take is that they are a necessary part of public-ish internet-based communication, it's just that Twitter's implementation of it was the worst possible way to do it, so that's soured a lot of people on the concept. Tumblr's way, for example, is a lot better. It will always have some capacity to be leveraged to abuse people, of course... but that's true of all communication, so not in itself enough reason to totally abandon the concept.

Some people need an audience to keep a roof over their head and food on the table, and it's the only option for many marginalized people who aren't able to be gainfully employed in society due to bigotry or lack of support. What do you want them to do, just starve because a fascist burned down their only means of generating income?
And why the hell are you letting brands own the word "audience" anyway, and pretending it's some dirty thing now? The arts have used that word respectfully for centuries, long before brands came around
