Thinking about the time I called a crisis line and made the person on the line ugly laugh by talking about my IT job and saying "I basically have the same job as you except the people calling me want to kill themselves because Excel isn't working"
@alexandria @Bitplumber I was literally asked a question but okay
@Bitplumber @alexandria What a great way to reframe being wrong about something. No notes, 10/10
@Bitplumber @alexandria that is exactly where I started, sms authentication is still more secure than 0 2fa, despite the fact that it's possible to breach. Just like a password is more secure than no password, despite it being possible to breach
@Bitplumber @alexandria But yeah the issues with SMS 2fa are why an authenticator app with end to end encryption is generally considered more secure. That doesn't mean sms is providing 0 security however

@Bitplumber @alexandria it's 2fa. You need both factors, the password and the code. Additionally, you can't derive a list of all services a person has sms 2fa linked to with access to their sms.

Some places may offer account recovery with the right phone number, which can be used to get in without the password, but that is not what 2fa is.

@Bitplumber @alexandria Because if your password is compromised your 2fa will keep your account secure unless the attacker also breaches 2fa, and most attackers are not capable of breaching both? I don't see how this isn't immediately obvious.
@Bitplumber @alexandria Yeah your 2fa can potentially be breached, it's still more secure than not having it
@slut @wanderinglens yeah genuinely, Mastodon is a lot more conflict averse than Twitter was, which is not a bad thing but there are times when I would prefer to fight with strangers online.
