Val and Faith kick off the show with their bike moments and collectively appreciate the recent shift to autumn. We chat about the recent death of two teenagers in Queensland on an 'e-bike', although its hard to know much about the circumstances at this point. We also remind listeners that the Elizabeth Street protected bike lanes are being ripped up this morning ahead of the re-sheeting of the road and the rebuilding of the lanes in a narrower, less safe configuration. When will the State Government take responsibility for Strategic Cycling Corridors?
Elizabeth Street Protected Bike Lanes: A history 1993-2026, countering false narrative there has been, to broadly quote, ‘no community consultation’ in relation to these lanes or issues raised by community members or accessibility concerns. Yeah it's long ...

Elizabeth Street, Richmond update: Yarra Council rips up bike lanes – “Road Safety” Minister lets it happen. Strategic Cycling Network Design Guidelines ignored!
'Advisory bike lanes' are a bad design.
They're something that road planners made up after confusing advisory lane narrowing markings on roads in the Netherlands for bike lanes.
They use people riding bicycles as the traffic calming measure which clearly doesn't provide protection to them and actively endangers them.
You can see them implemented on Napier St in Fitzroy, and they're the worst part about Napier St (which is made quite nice by the modal filters)

Works to narrow the Elizabeth St Bike lanes in Richmond are starting on Monday 16th March.
Sadly I'm sure this will be a surprise to a bunch of people that use this route and haven't engaged.
This route is used by 1000 people on bikes every day.
The bike lane is being narrowed from 2.1m to 1.5m but that 1.5m includes the unrideable gutter.
