@ContamClub So the students were supposed to make smears of sterile water, to check their technique. This one 1. did something weird with the streak technique and 2. got a really nice contaminant slightly outside her own drawing?
Anybody knows where the sun like structure comes from? The plate is about a week old, not super dry, grew at room temperature.

Exciting times... METACONTAMINATION
(The twitchy guys described above turned out to be contaminating my contaminant slide!)

My actual plate contaminant was Metabacillus niabensis, confirmed in the end by sequencing! 😅

The original colony (microaerobic conditions, whitish, wet and spreading) looks very different grown in air (rough, small, kinda Bacillus like).
