Today's #photooftheday. I found this rather large caterpillar in the garden last year, and couldn't resist taking a picture of it.

A bit of research shows that it's a vapourer moth caterpillar, Orgyia antiqua. It's also got the great other name of the rusty tussock moth.

Today's #photo was taken a few years ago, and I was really surprised to get close to this gorgeous creature. (granted, I was standing on a low bridge over the water at the time...)

Today's #photo, a shot of possibly one of the most forbidding trees I've ever photographed. The sky was all but grey when I took it, and the light made it seem like it was a black and white shot to begin with.

Blackbird nest update:

After the extreme weather this week, I've been wondering how the chicks are getting on, and I'm sad to say that there's only one left in the nest now. (that I can see, at least)

The good news is that its doing well. Both parents have been feeding it, and it looks healthy.

Forgive the photo - I still can't get close to the nest.
