Liu et al. used the NASA GRACE/FO missions to show that since 2019, groundwater depletion in California’s Central Valley has accelerated by 31% compared to recent droughts, and has increased by a nearly a factor of 5 compared to the 60-year average.
West Texas aquifer levels are dropping while the fracking boom draws 200 million gallons of freshwater per day. “We’re just planning to deplete it. It’s not like we’re conserving it,” one hydrogeologist said.

With 13 partner organizations, @sfbaykeeper filed comments on the draft environmental impact report for Governor Newsom’s Delta conveyance (#DeltaTunnel) project. The tunnel will increase diversions of water from the Bay-Delta.
TLDR:
If constructed, Newsom’s tunnel would be a death sentence for #SFBay’s fisheries & for communities that rely on those fish for food, recreation, & cultural practices.
