Most note-taking apps are racing to add AI. Obsidian has no built-in AI at all.

That's not a weakness, it's a feature. You decide whether to use AI, and which tools to use. You can add it via community plugins, or use it with external tools like Claude Code or Gemini CLI.

That kind of flexibility is part of why it's still my top pick. https://www.ctnet.co.uk/obsidian-review-2026/

Obsidian Review 2026: Is It Still the Best PKM App? - The Computer & Technology Network

My updated Obsidian review for 2026, covering Bases, the web clipper, and new features. Is it still the best PKM app? Here's my honest take.

The Computer & Technology Network

One of Obsidian's strengths is that it can be used in so many different ways, and that's also the source of its steep learning curve.

I use it for PKM, journaling, and writing. But I know of people who use it purely for task management or writing fiction.

What does your Obsidian setup look like?

One of Obsidian's most underrated features isn't a feature at all; it's the file format.

Your notes are plain Markdown files, stored locally. If Obsidian disappeared tomorrow, your notes wouldn't be worthless. That's a promise most note-taking apps can't make.

A lot has changed since my last look. Bases, the web clipper, and web viewer are all new. But is it still the PKM app I'd recommend? Short answer: yes. Longer answer: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/obsidian-review-2026/

From my latest post:

"A PKM isn't about storing information. It is a personal architecture aimed at helping you to think and remember."

If your PKM is a thinking tool, not a filing cabinet, the question becomes: can AI help you think better, not just store more?

Your PKM isn't just a note store. it's a cognitive architecture that protects your thinking from AI dependency. Here's how Zettelkasten keeps you in control.

Has AI changed how you think about your note-taking practice?

I've been wrestling with where helpful AI assistance ends and outsourced thinking begins. There's a version of AI-assisted PKM that builds your cognition, and a version that quietly erodes it.

What's your experience been? I explore my own answer here: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/pkm-cognitive-protection-ai/

One thing five years of Zettelkasten has taught me: productive friction isn't the enemy of learning — it's how learning happens.

Writing notes in my own words, making my own connections — that's where the thinking occurs. It's why I'm careful about where AI fits in my PKM.

Five years of Zettelkasten has convinced me: your PKM isn't just a note store. It's a cognitive architecture — a way of thinking for yourself rather than outsourcing it.

The final post in my AI and cognition series explores how Zettelkasten protects your thinking, and where AI fits in: https://www.ctnet.co.uk/pkm-cognitive-protection-ai/

I include this in the system prompt of every AI I use:

'Give honest and constructive feedback.'

I want AI to help me become a better thinker — which means I need it to challenge me, not just agree with me. That's a harder thing to get right than it sounds. https://www.ctnet.co.uk/protecting-your-mind-from-ai/

One thing I've added to my quarterly review: a deliberate audit of my AI use.

I ask myself five questions, including: 'Where have I become too reliant on AI?' and 'Am I using AI as a starting point or an endpoint?'
