Eggheads, boneheads, queue, queue for them
We were early and we were late
But still, live at the Witch Trials...
Lie Dream of a Casino Soul
Well, I didn't eat the weekend
But I put the weight back on again
And our kid got back from Munich
He didn't like it much.
Ok time to decide which is the best interpretation of Walk On By.
Dionne Warwick, Issac Hayes, the Stranglers or Smith & Mighty?
Trick question of course, the Dionne version is definitive - but the others are all amazing, including - surprisingly - the Stranglers version.
The Mekons - The Quality of Mercy is not Strnen (Virgin 1979)
Possibly my favourite cover image / album title combo.
(References the theory that an infinite number of monkeys hammering away on typewriters will eventually produce the complete works of Shakespeare)
The message of the cover (nearly but not quite getting there) entirely appropriate to the contents of the album, where the Mekons serve up a rambunctious, scruffy noise, endearing enough but overshadowed at the time by their friends Gang of Four.
The peak of punk-era Mekons had already passed, with their earlier 7" Where Were You, still the best place to head for a definitive blast of Mekons.
Farewell to a grotty year. Six hours or so of mindbending tunes - my favourites of 2022, new releases and old.
Happy Xmas all.
I've had a challenging year -this is a playlist of the music that got me through it intact - lots of new releases and a scattering of old treasures and oddities. The mix gets steadily more out there as it goes on.
It does help show how much great music came out this year.
