Whilst I'm on my anti bank rant. I briefly worked for Lloyds (yeah I know it's not a good look but an agency placed me there and I've got to eat) They absolutely took money for themselves that was meant for charity. I can say this without risk of being sued because it is true.

I currently have 3 complaints against 3 different banks. All of which are completely valid but am expecting to be fobbed off on two of them with spin and misdirection. The 3rd is definitely actionable and they know it.

I have a theory that when things are really bad in society as a whole that's when the mad stories come out. I reckon you could link prevalence of big cat sightings and aliens/UFOs in the press to how bad things are for people on the planet. Is it the press trying to lessen/distract our pain so we don't start a revolution. Or are people's natural response to trauma to want some fantasy? Needless to say it's a theory I have. I have no intention to back it up with research or anything!
