We suggest that to capitalize on future methodological advances in text analysis, researchers should supplement closed-ended questions with more open-ended questions in high-quality, representative, longitudinal studies.
We assess the value of an open-ended question about well-being (β€œWhat do you do to make life go well?”) in three samples of the Midlife in the United States study. We show that closed- and open-ended measures of well-being similarly predict objective health indicators (e.g., mortality). But while closed-ended measures of well-being are strongly correlated with hundreds of other closed-ended self-ratings, the open-ended measure is distinct.
Do self-reports of well-being matter outside of the survey context? Or do these reports reflect idiosyncratic survey behavior? Delighted that work led by my colleague, Will Hobbs, has been published at PNAS https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2212867120?fbclid=IwAR2K3EmBrznZfrKjx_Vol8h1rztvkhOY_E7nNvsM5CLNvHTX9YXYpVSeAFc
I created a spotify playlist for my "Science of Well-Being" class and invited students to add to it. Within seconds, I had more than a hundred songs. Rumors of the demise of humans are greatly exaggerated #ChatGPT
