@sellathechemist

Do keep in mind that the pixel size of FIRMS is 375-500m whereas the trigger for an active fire detection within a pixel can be caused by something much smaller creating a SWIR anomaly. Small scale burning in the tropics is very common as a form of land/waste management, if you actually zoom in on that map you'll see it's not the horrifying apocalypse depicted at the zoom used in the screen shot.

@davidho Tyre dust is also a huge source of microplastic pollution...
Yesterday, there was melting over 59% of the area of Greenland. This is by far the highest value so early in the season.
@nomdeb @revk @sarae It's why this is so Sus alot of these companies are harvesting good will to create data for training models that have a commercial end use
@aarnegranlund @Ruth_Mottram I don't recommend looking into it at all as it's beyond morbid, but the documentation of the activities undertaken by Japanese Unit 731 are a pretty good indicator of how the Japanese were occasionally treating their neighbours at the time. One attack involved dropping bubonic plague infected fleas. Horrible times all round.

@Ruth_Mottram Have to say that when I look this up now it turns up all kinds of accusations of fraud, so that may be a romantic tale not reality, it's a nice piece but it's origins seem to be contested!
@Ruth_Mottram One of the world's saddest songs, Adagio in Gm was reconstructed from burnt remnants picked from the rubble of Dresden library after the atrocities that were committed.
