Let’s be clear: most refugees —Rohingyas, Afghans, Venezuelans, Syrians — don’t fly, by jet plane or otherwise, they trudge over the nearest border on foot (or by bus if they’re lucky) and don’t make it any further.

Braverman’s objection here is that a few have the temerity to make it to the West.

Suella Braverman says the police should be neutral between racism and anti-racism, and have been taken over by “trans ideology”.

Just an absolute fiesta of far right noises, from the dog whistle to the klaxon.

Not convinced I’d have gone with “fire safety is a plot against the government” but what do I know

Learnt a huge amount from Regenesis by George Monbiot about how food production threatens the soil & the wider environment, but also fascinating & thrilling ideas on what we could do about it

Stoking anger & hatred against asylum seekers & human rights lawyers alike, but in a respectful & serious manner

Also seeming, in a respectful & serious manner, to equate abuse of the law with persuading courts to disagree with the government

Even aside from the ethical issues over use of so-called “scientific” age assessments for young refugees, it’s hard to see how they’d survive legal challenge. Simply bleating on about some quack method being “robust” or “scientific” doesn’t make it so. I suspect the govt knows this very well and I’m going to stick my neck out and say these proposals won’t ever go forward.

Exclusive: Radiographer chief warns system already ‘at breaking point’ without additional pressure

The Independent

Going to stick my neck out & say the Tories won’t, in fact, pass laws ensuring asylum seekers who come to the UK “illegally” are “detained & swiftly removed”, but they will whip up yet more of the hatred that has already inspired far right terrorism.

The reason I say this is that “swiftly removing” all who arrive “illegally” would mean withdrawing from the Refugee Convention & ECHR. If Sunak intended that, that’d be enormous news which he’d surely have mentioned today.
