It was an unseasonably warm November day in 2019 when the nation’s then chief law officer, Christian Porter, left a meeting of the expenditure review committee with a word of advice for a shell-shocked Stuart Robert. “It’s right, mate,” he said.
The embattled head of the Reserve Bank, Philip Lowe, has lately changed the way he describes his great fear for Australia’s economy. He used to warn about a “wage-price spiral”, driving inflation even higher. Now he has turned that around and begun warning of a “price-wage spiral”.
The exposure of robo-debt throughout the robo-debt royal commission has been explosive and truly unsettling. Even if you were not victimised personally by the illegal scheme, you would have to question the decisions made by ministers and highly paid public servants throughout their period in office. Some of them are still highly paid and in office, although surely not for very much longer.
Last week I visited one of our local nurseries with my wife, Jessica. The manager’s cottage had two small signs displayed in his window: “Climate Change Action Now” and “Fossil Fools”. They seemed like an omen of the Albanese government’s safeguards legislation and the response of the Greens. The government struggled last year to get parliamentary approval for its target to achieve emissions reductions of 43 per cent by 2030, en route to net zero by 2050. It now needs the policy framework to achieve that 2030 target.
