Sausages often involve secret ingredients—and for your own peace of mind it may be better not to know exactly how they’re made🌭INI reports can feel the same way!

🗳️After months of negotiations, the European Parliament has adopted the Voss report on #AI and #copyright.

The final text includes a few improvements, but the overall outcome remains disappointing:
🔸Problematic provisions on press publishers’ content
🔸An overall lack of coherence

Parliament adopts INI report on AI and copyright: No clear path forward

The plenary vote to adopt the own-initiative report initiated by Axel Voss brings to a close a process that began in June 2025. While many aspects of the report improved during the committee stage and the text itself does not have immediate legal consequences, the overall outcome remains disappointing.

Submission to the open consultation on the ERA Act

Yesterday, we submitted our response (PDF file) to the public consultation questionnaire on the European Research Area (ERA) Act. The ERA Act, which the European Commission is expected to introduce towards the end of this year, aims to remove persistent barriers to the completion of the European Research Area. 🚏Next stop: Our comments on the Digital Omnibus

While many have rightfully criticised the planned changes to the data protection regime - we want to focus on a part of the proposal that spells danger to open projects like @wikimediafoundation

The Digital Omnibus and open data: Risks for open projects

The EU’s Digital Omnibus Proposal has sparked controversy, especially over the planned changes to the GDPR. One amendment to the Open Data Directive in particular could have serious consequences, potentially undermining open projects.

Article 8 of the DSM Directive held a great promise:
The path towards a shared collective memory - a vast decentralised digital library and archive.

Yet clearly, this hasn't materialised.

What went wrong? And more importantly, how can we fix it?

Find out in our guest blog post by Maarten Zeinstra: https://communia-association.org/2025/10/21/the-failure-of-article-8-dsm/

The failure of Article 8 DSM

With Article 8 of the DSM Directive, we imagined lowering the barriers for a shared collective memory. Now, just before the European Commission starts a review of the DSM Directive we can take stock. And, despite local successes, we must be honest: Article 8 has not proven to be the right legislative key.
