I believe digital privacy should feel simple, not overwhelming. I’m learning as I go and building 121Drop, a simple tool for local, offline backups.

Deep in validation mode right now. Running repeated backup tests to make sure the basics behave consistently. Quiet work, but it matters.

Getting close to the end of the first v0 build for 121Drop. Most of this phase has been about making sure the basics behave reliably before moving on.

Starting at the very beginning with 121Drop.
Keeping things small and focused while I work through the core backup pieces.

I’ve noticed that most Android backup options either push you to the cloud or assume you’re comfortable managing files yourself.

I’m curious how people here handle photo backups today.

Do you use cloud storage, manual copies, something else, or nothing at all?

I’m exploring whether a simpler, local option is worth building:

@realestninja Yeah, that’s a good comparison.

The idea is similar, but those were built for desktops. I’m trying to bring that same simple, local backup idea to Android phones today.

@realestninja The idea is to make backing up photos and videos to an external drive simple. Plug in a USB drive or SSD, tap once, and it handles the copy for you.

I’m not building 121Drop to chase growth or subscriptions.

I’m building it because I don’t like where backups are headed. More accounts, more cloud lock-in, more monthly fees.

121Drop is meant to be simple, local, and boring in the best way.

I’m validating this quietly before writing code. If that approach resonates, you can follow along here:

I ran out of storage on my phone earlier this year.

The options were:
– delete photos
– pay for cloud storage
– or figure out my own backup system

I didn’t want another subscription.

That’s why I’m building 121Drop. An Android app to back up photos to an external drive, offline.

If you’ve ever hit that “storage full” moment and didn’t like your options, I’m validating this here:

I don’t mind plugging in a drive once in a while.

I do mind being forced into cloud backups I didn’t ask for.

I’m exploring whether local, offline backups on Android are still something people want.

That’s what I’m testing with 121Drop:

Cloud photo backups quietly turn into another monthly subscription.

I wanted a simpler option for Android. Plug in a drive, tap once, done.

That idea became 121Drop, an offline backup app with no accounts or cloud.

I’m validating whether this is actually useful. If it is, you can join here:
