Seems like 2008 me got on twitter to spend time being clever for no money and increasing twitters brand for no money and in return have no time to do work that would give me money

@caraellison

It's kinda mindblowing when you realize that the time spent on corporate #SocialMedia was actually unpaid work couched as a "free" service. Once I started seeing my attention as a form of investment, I got more intentional about moving that energy to #Mastodon...

@mattcropp @caraellison not to mention the constant "free" content that users continuously supply. If you took that away their business models would collapse overnight.
@mattcropp @caraellison important realization; we also need to broaden our own definition of work to include the whole range of productive activity, including non-market activity

@Matt_Noyes @mattcropp @caraellison

Are you absolutely sure you want all stereotypes of capitalist society, created to support the structures of exploitation being applied to free and creative activity? I consider it rather suicidal.

@Petros @mattcropp @caraellison Knowing Matt (and sharing his name) I would guess he's not a big fan of the stereotypes of capitalist society. ;-) I think you and I are making the same point -- the concepts of "labor" and "work" in capitalist social relations are not the same as in solidarity economy. Three interesting sources on this: Luis Razeto on the "C Factor," Marx on productive and unproductive labor, and Arizmendiarrieta on labor as co-creation with God.

I got bruises on my head from those books you threw at me. 😉 There was no need. I am a simple anarcho-technologist and all that high theory is way above my paygrade.

My point is, outside of your highly educated and politically-aware circle, how do you expect people to understand the difference in definitions, let alone start using _your_ definition? Without answering this question first, all changes of definition will only reinforce (already existing) progressive ivory tower.

I cope with the same problem on a daily basis, so I know how much energy it takes to keep people understanding that technology is not just IT, not just heating or waste management, but also food processing, learning, social dynamics and thinking. So.

@Petros @mattcropp @caraellison Sorry for the bruises! Good point: we also need to change the way to talk and what we talk about when we talk about labor, so we don't just copy the dominant ways. How do you do it in your own activity?

@Matt_Noyes @mattcropp @caraellison

Painfully slow. 🙂

It all depends on specific audience, of course, but I usually start from some stereotype-breaking examples, and then explain the concept. With technology it is easy, but try to explain people that the very idea of "hobby" or "holidays" is inherently capitalist. Ha!

@mattcropp @caraellison @mastodon.social I want to plaster your message about corporate social media all over the internet.
