There was a workshop on the next new thing in #IR just a couple of months ago #SWIRL. My guess is privacy preserving IR using homomorphic encryption will become important in industry. Someone will crack the problem and it will suddenly have a wealth of uses and interest from researchers.

I agree. The fact that we are on mastodon tells that many users care more about keeping their data.

However after this 'betrayal ', I am not sure where users will trust the technology.... Especially when they can't tell whether it is on or off.
