@FuckOffGoogle Hello, I've been wondering about this since your reply: why does being a centralised, US-based service make DuckDuckGo bad? I understand that centralisation can create a monopoly of power and thus disincentivise acting ethically. (If I understand your objection correctly?) Why is being US-based also a disadvantage? Because of how deregulated certain businesses are there?

(Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable about this type of thing! 😳 😬 )

@scaredycat Since Ed Snowden's doc, we know that the PRISM program from the NSA (one of many) means "open bar" access to Google and most other big tech companies for the surveillance of millions of people, with no oversight. Other docs show these data are shared with quite a few other agencies.

So in practice it seems that a US company has *no other choice* than letting these unaccountable people access any data of any of their customers...

GoogleAndMassSurveillance - FuckOffGoogle

@FuckOffGoogle Damn. 😞 This is a shame, especially as DuckDuckGo's image depends on the safety they can offer you from this sort of thing. I know DDG don't store certain data about their users - I wonder if that at least would protect users somewhat if anyone tries to use DDG's data. (Also, that's VERY alarming. Potentially any US-based company, wow.)

Nevertheless, thank you for this link! I'm planning to read into this and the other pages when I have time. 😁
