@lx From my understanding, this is probably one of the worst exploits since ever? I barely know anything about it but it sounds pretty horrific.
Is it actually true the patch (if your manufacturer bothers to package one up for your product) takes 30% of performance off?
Thats pretty catastrophic if its true :s
@DatTux From what I understand the exploits are only that dramatic on Intel chips where on AMD you need physical access to the machine.
The patch only fixes Meltdown unfortunately but the performance hit isn't that big of a deal for most people. Standard desktop workloads like encryption, compression, gaming etc. are more or less the same. The worst I've seen there is about 10% when transferring 4K files to SSDs. The biggest impact is on server software (probably database software).
@lx crikey, pretty crazy stuff. Guess your right about performance hits, although I shouldnt think data centres are gonna be best pleased.
Wonder if government agencies knew about this before it got out? Id imagine more than likely, bit like with heartbeat I suppose.
@DatTux I heard about an Amazon cloud server customer who noticed a degradation when Amazon had silently patched their servers. It might also not be noticeable unless you are constantly at full load. 🤷🏻♂️
Btw: here are the numbers I was referring to: https://youtube.com/watch?v=_qZksorJAuY
