They should call Windows Update Shroedinger's Box. My computer is both alive and dead right now.
@theamericanjerk my fav is the state of "Windows behaves bizarrely, to the point you think the machine has hardware issues because that's a better notification system than actually posting an update is ready for installation notification to the Action Center"
I've experienced this three times this week on three different machines.

@Zathraslives - At least this machine takes updates. I've got one that tries to dl and install the July cumulative update every time I boot it. It's... not speedy.

BTW: after half an hour, the cat's alive.

@theamericanjerk You can probably fix that by downloading the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool. Hard to find, but copious amounts of googling, diagnostics and hotfix installs, fixed an issue I was having where it got stuck like that. It's a pain, but with sufficient digging you can usually get the thing working again without a full wipe/reinstall, which is what L1 support will suggest everytime.
